Local market February/March 2020

For my next post, I will post about our semi-local market.  We live in a small village of about 100-200 houses and our nearest 'city', Wang Nam Yen is a very short drive away.  Today's post is about the market in Wang Nam Yen.  Twice a week it is a "big" market with many more vendors than usual.  There is a larger variety of food and other items available.  Seafood is a specialty of the "big" market days.  Let's start with some food images.

This fish is all ready to steam. We often would steam it add it to a broth with manao (lime).

This fish is salted and broiled as you will see below.  We peel the skin and if it is cooked properly the fish is very tasty.  It is one of my favorites!  We can buy at the market, but quite often Pum's sister brings us fish from her fish pond for a DIY feast.

The 'meat' near the head is particularly tasty.  Some Thai people thing the eyes are the best part.  Sometimes the fish heads are used in soup primarily as a flavoring ingredient.  In Singapore, fish head curry is a specialty.

Lots of salted fish was on offer this week.  By the way, the fish does NOT tasty salty.

Lots of fish is available that is no prepared in any way.  Some live and some on ice.  We often deep fry fish and eat with a super tasty spicy sauce.

Many kinds and price ranges of squid are regularly on offer.

Pum loves shrimp and there are many sizes.  I prefer the medium size and she prefers the large ones.  We can barbecue them or stir fry or use the in soup.

More salted fish being broiled.

Clams!

Crab!

So much for the seafood.  Here is a small sampling of other foods being sold.

There are many kinds of fruit being sold, this one is called Chompoo (Rose Apple).  It one of my favorites.  They are crispy and very refreshing.

Not sure what the name of these are, but they are one of Pum's favorites.  They are a bit too sour for me.

And, of course, mangos!  They are in season now and cost about $1 per kilo.  Yes, one US dollar per kilo.  Cheap and good!  Perfect to eat alone or put in smoothies or margaritas!  Ours aren't ripe yet but they are close and I hope they will be as good as these!

Popular Thai snack - probably made with pork.

One of many things on offer.

Sushi is very popular here and always has too much mayo!

The rolls are pretty well constructed!

This looks like plain buttered toast to me.

Lots of stuff on a stick.  Can be squid, chicken or pork.

Popular Thai breakfast snack.  Sort of like a donut and generally served with a coconut based dipping sauce.

Fuk thong - pumpkin.  This dish is stir-fried with egg and various other things.  Another of my favorites.

Thai desert.

Another Thai dessert.

Still another Thai dessert.

Cooked much like the breakfast snack, these are a little sweet.

Here are the normal three types of mushrooms normally available.  Occasionally there are wild mushrooms as well at a premium price.

Bamboo worms and crickets!  Stir fried and highly nutritious.  I've eaten both and they are not bad at all!

This is our neighbor from across the street.  He and his wife farm crickets and bamboo worms and sell them at several local markets!

Here are a few more people pics from the market.

That's all for today!  I plan to bounce back and forth from older photos of my various SE Asian travels and current and older pictures from my present life in Thailand.  There will be a number of cross posts of current life between here and Facebook.  If you want to check out my Facebook posts without the political posts, search on #LifeInTheVillage.
